Sam Curling

I am a London based street photographer living in Rickmansworth. I shoot primarily in black and white as I firmly believe that colour can detract from the grittiness and rawness of an image. Black and white imagery draws the viewer more than colour and encourages people to study and interpret them for themselves.
My work and projects reflect my long held interests in social documentary photography, more specifically the East End of London and the changing face of areas like Shoreditch and Whitechapel caused by the gradual gentrification of the areas. I am particularly interested in capturing images of street markets such as Brick Lane, Petticoat Lane and Columbia Road before their potential demise.
I attempt to take an ethical approach to all of my street photography work spending time with the people I shoot, getting to know and understand them and their back stories.
